10. Peanut Butter and Jelly by Ben Clanton
Narwhal and Jelly are back and Narwhal has a new obsession . . . peanut butter! He’s so obsessed he even wants to change his name to . . . that’s right . . . Peanut Butter! Ever-sensible Jelly isn’t so sure that’s the best idea, but is all for Narwhal trying new things (instead of just eating waffles all the time, no matter how delicious waffles are).
In this third book, Narwhal and Jelly star in three new stories about trying new things, favorite foods and accepting who we are. Always funny and never didactic, this underwater duo charms again through their powerful combination of positive thinking, imagination and joyfulness.

The Creature of the Pines by Adam Gidwitz
Elliot Eisner isn’t exactly excited about starting at a brand-new school in a brand-new town; he’d much rather stay at home and read a book. But things take an unexpected turn when he finds out his weird new teacher, Professor Fauna, has planned a field trip for Elliot’s very first day. Along with a new friend–brave, outspoken Uchenna Devereaux–Elliot gets caught up in a secret group of adventurers, The Unicorn Rescue Society, whose goal is to protect and defend the world’s mythical creatures. Princess Magnolia is excited. Excited and nervous. She’s going to the Interkingdom Science Fair today to present her poster about seeds and plants, and when she arrives, she sees that her friends are there too! Princess Honeysuckle made a mole habitat, Princess Sneezewort has built a blanket fort, and Tommy Wigtower has a talking volcano that’s saying “EAAAAT!” Wait, what? book 6 in The Princess in Black series
Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini

It is also a vivid portrait of their life in Homs, Syria, before the war, and of that city’s swift transformation from a home into a deadly war zone.

The Principal Strikes Back by Jarrett Krosoczka
As told through a mix of comics, doodles, and journal entries, it’s Victor Starspeeder’s third year at Jedi Academy! It’s also his first year EVER without his sister, Christina. Plus, things at Jedi Academy are… weird. After last year’s security breach, Principal Marr has been demoted and replaced with Commander ZC-04, a big, scary droid. There’s a curfew, new regulations, and everyone is on edge. But when Victor and his friends dig a little deeper into the changes at the school, they find that there’s a lot more to this story than the droids want to admit!
book 6 in the Jedi Academy series
My Father’s Words by Patricia MacLachlan
Declan O’Brien always had a gentle word to share, odd phrases he liked to repeat, and songs to sing while he played basketball. His favorite song was “Dona Nobis Pacem” “Grant Us Peace.” His family loved him deeply and always knew they were loved in return.
But a terrible accident one day changes their lives forever, and Fiona and Finn O’Brien are left without a father. Their mother is at a loss. What words are there to guide them through such overwhelming grief?
At the suggestion of their friend Luke, Fiona and Finn volunteer at an animal rescue shelter where they meet two sweet dogs who are in need of comfort, too. Perhaps with time, patience, and their father’s gentle words in their hearts, hope will spark once more.
Ratings and Reviews from the Librarians
Bekka rated it ★★★★★ and said “I love this book! Such a difficult subject, especially for kids, but MacLachlan handles it in her usual wonderful way. Her writing is excellent, as always! The characters in this are outstanding – especially Finn. This would be an excellent book for any child (or parent!) who is dealing with grief. Its also good for those who enjoy a good, realistic story. And, of course, the dogs! MacLachlan has had wonderful dogs in several of her books, and this book is no exception. I had a difficult time reading this one without crying, but it is ultimately a hopeful, uplifting book. Highly Recommended!“
Charlene rated it ★★★★★ and said “This goes beyond words! I cant explain how I feel from just a small book that took me 20 mins to read. I think everyone needs to learn from these two children, and two dogs!”
Cathy rated it ★★★★.
