International Observe the Moon Night

Join fellow moon lovers (or Selenophiles) to observe the moon.
Friday, October 15th, at 7pm. Masks are requested.

From NASA: “International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the Moon is around first quarter ― a great phase for evening observing. Furthermore, a first-quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the Moon’s cratered landscape.”

The Library Book Club will next meet on Thursday, October 21st, at 6:30pm.

The book will be The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley:

It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

Copies are available at the Front Circulation Desk.

The Library Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, September 16th, at 6:30pm in the Community Room.

There has been a change of book; the book for September is Sold by Patricia McCormick.

Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut in the mountains of Nepal. Her family is desperately poor, but her life is full of simple pleasures, like raising her black-and-white speckled goat, and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family’s crops, Lakshmi’s stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

Traveling from her home of Nepal to India, Lakshmi is confronted with the horrific truth: she has been sold into child slavery. Life become cruel and a living nightmare. Still, she lives by her mother’s words—”Simply to endure is to triumph”—and gradually, she forms friendships with the other girls that enable her to survive in this terrifying new world. Then the day comes when she must make a decision—will she risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life?

Come join your fellow community members on Thursday, June 17th at 6:30 p.m. for a lively discussion of both classic works and modern masterpieces.

Our book for June is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein:

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life … as only a dog could tell it.

Reading copies are available to check out at the Circulation Desk.
