On the Same Page is back and this year we’re reading “Holes” by Louis Sachar! Join our big community read and pick up your free-to-keep kick-off kit from the circulation desk today!  Please, limit 1 book per household.

Teen Crafts

Teens 12-18! Bring your friends and listen to music while you make an awesome art project to take home with you! Teen Crafts are held in the Community Room on Thursdays at 4:30 PM. On February 1, we will learn and practice sewing basics while making a felt forest friend keychain. Then, on February 15, we will make pocket worry pets!

Sploosh!

Join us for an activity inspired by Louis Sachar’s “Holes.” We’re making spiced peach recipes as mentioned in the book and pureeing them into “Sploosh” for sampling! Ages 12 and up are invited Friday, Feb 2 at 7 PM in the Community Room. See you there!

Chess & Game Club + Rated Chess Tournament

Join the Chess & Game Club for ages 9-18 Mondays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room! On February 5 & 12, engage in strategic battles and game adventures. But mark your calendars for February 26, when 25 chess players of all levels will compete in a Rated Chess Tournament! Participants must be registered members of the US Chess Federation. Sign up for the tournament using this form. Spectators are welcome, so bring your family and friends! Please, make sure to enter through the exterior Community Room door.

Have a say in what goes on at the Library for teens! Ages 12-18 are welcome to join us Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 4 PM in the Community Room to voice their input.

Anime Club

Join Teen Anime Club for ages 12-18! This month we’ve got a lineup of fun activities including a “Mushi-Shi” watch party on Feb. 8. On Feb. 22 we’ll be testing our knowledge with Anime Wheel of Fortune. Then catch ‘em all on Feb. 29 in the Pokemon Scavenger Hunt! Catch up with your anime-loving friends on Thursdays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room.

Innovative Inventions

Stanley Yelnats III is an inventor. Are you? We’ll give you a bag of supplies that shouldn’t be a part of anything and challenge your group to create the impossible. What should you build? That’s up to you. Surprise us! Bags are limited. Sign up by Thursday, February 8th. We’ll have your bags the following Monday. Then you’ll have 11 days to get creative. Inventions will be displayed through the end of the month and posted on our Facebook page. This activity is designed for all ages!

Dungeons & Dragons

Calling all young adventurers! Join us for an epic journey at Teen Dungeons & Dragons on Fridays, February 9 & 23 at 3:30 PM in the Community Room. Whether you’re a seasoned dungeon crawler or a newbie explorer, we welcome ages 12-18 to embark on a quest of imagination and fun. This month, Take your new character on a Camp Green Lake campaign with Stanley Yelnats and all his buddies from Louis Sacher’s book, “Holes”. Make sure you sign up for our Teen Discord Server where we’ve posted preparation details. Don’t miss out on this magical adventure! 

“I Can Fix That”

Onion Sam can fix just about anything. How handy are you? Expert fixer Bryan Jacobson will show us reasonable repairs that we should feel confident to do around our own homes – and let us know when to call in the professionals. Young League of Writers

Calling all aspiring teen writers! Ready to share your creativity and connect with fellow wordsmiths? Join the Young League of Writers, exclusively for ages 12-18! On Wednesday, Feb. 14 we’ll discuss how to master the art of the short story, while writing from an art prompt: Monet’s inspiring painting “Water Lilies.” Meet us in the Community Room from 4 to 5:30 PM. Cook With A Book

Teen chefs and book lovers! Get ready to whip up some delicious fun as we create a mouthwatering peach cobbler inspired by Louis Sachar’s Holes! Let the flavors of the story come to life in every bite. Cook with a Book is on Wednesday, February 21, at 4:30 PM in the Community Room for ages 12-18.

Escape From Camp Green Lake

Join us at Camp Green Lake for a limited-time escape room experience! Uncover hidden truths from “Holes” as you decipher clues, unlock secrets, and race against time to escape the Warden’s office. Free of charge, first come, first served. Sign up now! Walk-ins are welcome, but priority will be given to those with time slots. Ages 12 and up. Groups of 2-5. Open February 27 – March 2 every 45 minutes within the following time frames:

  • Tue-Thu. 3-7 PM
  • Fri. 12-5 PM
  • Sat. 10 AM-1 PM

Please arrive 5 mins before your slot. Late arrivals may not be accommodated. Anyone under 12 must be with someone 14+. To sign up, please fill out the form below.

Have you ever wanted to travel to all 50 states? Take an epic journey with us this year as we visit each great state of our nation. Armchair travelers ages 12 and up will read one book set in each state, earning state stickers and opportunities to enter the final drawing for our grand prizes. Any reader who joins us for even a portion of the trip will have the opportunity to earn small prizes along the way. Christmas is not just a day, it’s a feeling! It’s the joy that fills our hearts, the sparkle in our eyes, and the warmth we share with our family and friends. This year, everyone is invited to Madison Library District’s 14th Annual Christmas Extravaganza, a Christmas Morning-themed gathering to celebrate the joyous season.

Festive Pajama Party

Love the idea of staying in your cozy pajamas all day? Well, we do too! That’s why this year’s Extravaganza is a Christmas Morning-themed pajama party. So, put on your festive PJ’s, grab a treat, and join us for an evening of stories and crafts. It’s going to be a cozy and fun evening filled with laughter and cheer for the whole family.

Santa’s Visit

And what’s a Christmas celebration without Santa Claus? Get ready for a special visit from Santa himself. Santa’s visits will start at 4:30 PM. Make sure you’re there to greet him and share your Christmas wishes!

Hauntings – Library Teen Virtual Convention

Teens are invited to join the annual Library Teen Virtual Convention! Inspired by all our favorite ghost stories, spooky folklore, and mysterious cryptids, this year’s theme is HAUNTINGS! The Convention is hosted on Discord and will run from Sept. 4 to Oct. 27. This year we’re pleased to have panels from guest experts on topics like AI Art and Ethics, game design, and careers in STEM, as well as a variety of games and challenges and daily art, writing, and conversation prompts. Learn the art of chess and other games with the master of fun and strategy, Nick Allison. Tweens and teens ages 9-18 are welcome to join every Monday from 4:30-5:30 PM in the Community Room. Game supplies will be provided.

Teen Crafts

Make ‘n take crafts for teens! We will meet in the Community Room on Thursdays, Oct. 5 and 19 at 4:30 PM. Any extra kits will be available after the activity at the Circulation desk while supplies last. On Oct. 5, teens will paint and decorate wooden blocks to get ready for the Halloween season. On Oct. 19, we will make some preposterous pranks which, of course, are totally harmless! For ages 12-18.

Anime Club

Teen Anime Club is watching Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun this month! Ages 12-18 are invited to join and make friends with other anime and manga fans. Come on Thursdays, October 12 & 26 at 4:30 PM in the Community Room.

Young League of Writers

Pull your ghostly writing out of the shadows and into the light with editor/author, September C. Fawkes, creator of the award-winning writing tip blog. She will guide you through the dark forest that leads toward publication and how to become an editor. The event will be streamed on Discord with the “Haunting” Library Teen Virtual Convention, October 11 @ 4:00 PM MST. Ages 12-18 will meet in the Community Room at that time to watch the stream together. Registration for the convention is not required. “TeenTober”

Help us celebrate TeenTober 2023 with cryptids, ghosts, and supernatural occurrences! We’ll have an “interactive” movie experience with Halloween favorites like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Wear your best costume for a contest and prizes at the end. Please, no weapons or masks. 

Ages 12-18 are invited on Friday, Oct. 13 from 7-9 PM in the Community Room.

Have you ever wanted to make a treacle tart from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? Or how about the scones from The Inheritance Games? Or maybe you would like to try the mallowmelt from Keeper of the Lost Cities. Then join us for our teen Cook with a Book! This month we will read “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley and make Frankenstein Crispy Rice Treats! You can check out a copy of the book at the front circulation desk. Ages 12-18 should meet us in the Community Room kitchen on Wednesday, October 25 at 4:30 PM.

Dungeons & Dragons

Calling all teen adventurers ages 12-18! Join our party and learn to play Dungeons & Dragons! We will meet in the Community Room Friday, Oct. 27 from 3:30-5:30 PM. Family Films

Free Family Films for all ages! Fridays at 3:30 PM in the Community Room! Oct. 6 is Oliver & Company, Oct. 13 is The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, and Oct. 20 is 101 Dalmatians.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older. Parents, please prescreen films to determine if it is appropriate for your child.

Teen Crafts

We’ve got crafts for teens (ages 12-18) at the Library! Join us Thursdays this month in the Community Room from 4:30-5:30 PM. Teens will be using perler beads to create cryptid creations on Sept. 7! For Sept. 21, teens will need to bring a pair of shoes that require laces so that they can learn new and unique ways that they can tie their shoes, changing their everyday shoes into their own unique pieces of art! The library will provide laces.

Would you like to meet TWO best selling authors and learn how to set up a story’s beginning, middle, and end? Now entering the Young League of Writers’ stage… Sian Ann Bessey AND Traci Hunter Abramson! Both of these authors are experts at storytelling and creating incredible plots that keep readers on the edge of their seats! We will meet to share what we’ve all been working on and talk with both of them about what makes writing great. Ages 12-18 are welcome to join us 4-5:30 PM in the Community Room on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Cook With a Book
