Poetry & Verse Contest: Terrible Things Can Happen to You!
What’s the worst that could happen? Find out with our poetry contest, Terrible Things Could Happen to You! Inspired by Flora and Ulysses, this contest invites ages 8+ to submit poems up to 600 words in any style of verse. Categories include Tween (8–11), Teen (12–17), and Adult (18+), with up to three poems allowed per entrant (submitted in one document to programs@madisonlib.org). Entries open February 3 and close February 24, with winners announced February 28 via Facebook and our newsletter. Don’t wait for disaster—start crafting your verse today!
Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures
NEW at the Library!
Calling all adventurers! Join our new Dungeons & Dragons program for adults and embark on epic quests in the world’s greatest tabletop role-playing game. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, you’ll explore fantastical realms, battle foes, and shape your own story. Led by an experienced Dungeon Master, sessions include pre-made characters and guidance for newcomers. Come solo or with friends on February 4th and 18th, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM, in the Community Room. Forge alliances, conquer villains, and make memories in this welcoming adventure for ages 18+.
Creative Writing Club
Calling all storytelling enthusiasts ages 18+! Meet us in the Community Room at 6:00 PM on Wednesdays, Feb. 5th and Feb. 19th. Share your writing, make new friends, and discuss the passion behind your craft. Let’s inspire each other!
Crafty Corner

Join us for Crafty Corner, an informal meet-up for adults 18+ who love to create! Bring your knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, or whatever craft you enjoy, and spend an evening with fellow makers. Meet us February 6 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room (and every first Thursday thereafter).

Dramatic Romance Readings
Ready for a night of drama, laughs, and questionable romance? Join us on Friday, February 7, at 7 PM in the Community Room for Dramatic Romance Readings (ages 18+)! Whether you want to take the stage or cheer from the audience, we’ll be reading aloud from the hilariously over-the-top back-cover summaries of cheesy paperbacks. Bring your flair—or just your sense of humor!
Terrible Things Can Happen to You: Emergency Preparedness
Readers of the Terrible Things Can Happen to You! comic know that being prepared is key! Join us on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 PM in the Community Room as Jennifer Porter, INL Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations, and Ben Porter, Shelley Fire Department, teach us basic first aid and emergency preparedness inspired by Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo.

Let your creativity shine at Adult Makers! Join us on Friday, February 21, at 7 PM in the Community Room to explore the art of character illustration and visual development. Learn how to bring your creations to life with form, color, and personality. Bring a story and character idea you’d love to bring to life. Ages 18+.
Take a Break Book Club
Join us on Thursday, February 27, at 6:30 PM to dive into the whimsical world of Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures! This charming tale begins with a squirrel, a vacuum cleaner, and an unexpected transformation. With superhero powers and misspelled poetry, Ulysses changes Flora’s outlook on life—and her heart. Bring your thoughts and enthusiasm as we discuss this heartwarming On the Same Page pick. Ages 18+.
The Science of Superheroes!
How do they do that? Well, they’re superheroes. But how do they do that? Join us on Friday, February 28, from 6:30–8:30 PM in the Community Room for an unforgettable evening of learning and fun for all ages!
Explore interactive stations that bring superhero science to life, and at 7:00, don’t miss a keynote by BYUI’s Brian Pyper—the most fun physicist you’ll ever meet—featuring plenty of audience participation. Come discover the science behind the superpowers!
Armchair Traveler Challenge
Reading can inspire creativity and we are painting a masterpiece! Take an epic journey with us this year as we explore the world of art, from color and style to history and industry. Armchair artists will read books to create a portfolio of canvases that earn them opportunities to enter the final drawing for our grand prizes.
