Junior
Armchair
Traveler Challenge
Excavation Intern Edition
Madison Library’s Year-Long Reading Adventure
AGES 10 to 14
January 1 through December 30, 2026
Reading is the perfect way to unearth information, entertainment, and
understanding, and we are ready to dig into some great books!
This year’s challenge has us grabbing our picks and shovels to burrow into the pages! Participating Junior Interns will read one book for each challenge, earning stickers and opportunities to win prizes in our grand prize drawing. Any reader who fulfills even a portion of their Artifact Journal will have the opportunity to earn small prizes along the way, but each reader who completes all 10 Inventory Log sheets in the reading journal will earn the 2026 Junior Armchair Traveler Intern prize.
Get your spades ready, here we go!
Rules of Play
Here’s how it works:
- Participation in this reading challenge is limited to Madison Library District patrons ages 10 to 14. Interns (or their parents) must have a current library account in good standing to be eligible.
- This reading challenge begins January 1, 2026, and ends at 7:00 pm on December 30, 2026. Only books read between those dates will count. All completed books must be reported by 7:00 pm on December 30, 2026 to be valid.
- The last day to sign up for this challenge is September 30, 2026.
- An Intern’s Artifact Reading Journal consists of 50 challenges divided into 10 themed Inventory Log Sheets. To complete each Log Sheet, read a book for each specified task listed on the Log Sheet page.
- When you’ve finished a book, visit the Circulation Desk at the Library to collect the appropriate sticker and get one step closer to completing that Inventory Log sheet.
- Once an entire Log sheet has been completed, readers will earn a small prize and an entry into the grand prize drawing.
- Inventory Log sheets, including any portion of a Log sheet, can be completed in any order, but all five parts on a Log sheet must be completed before that specific prize can be awarded.
- Interns who report their completed Artifact Journal of all 10 Inventory Log Sheets before 7:00 pm on December 30, 2026 will receive the 2026 Junior Armchair Traveler prize.
- Prizes may be picked up by the participant or a family member.
Participation Notes:
- Junior Excavation Interns must be independent readers ages 10-14 to join this challenge.
- The title and author for each book read must be recorded in your reading log.
- Books must clearly meet the criteria listed on the Inventory Log Challenge to count. Explanations for each task are found in the back of your reading log.
- Books must be a minimum of 100 pages in length. Books that will not be accepted include easy readers and picture/board books. Magazines are also not accepted.
- Audiobooks are accepted as long as the print version of the book meets the reading requirements.
- Any book read at any point of this year (Jan 1-Dec 30), including those read for other reading programs and book clubs, can be counted toward this challenge as long as they fit the reading requirement.
- A book can only be counted once, even if it meets more than one challenge criteria.
- Each portion of the reading challenge, including the reading challenge as a whole, may only be completed one time per Intern.
Wondering if a book fits the challenge? We are always happy to answer any questions you may have. Pick up a suggested title list for each Inventory Log Sheet at the Library or use Goodreads or Talpa Search to find new titles and plan reading lists. Don’t forget about ebooks!
