National Library Week Book Nook Contest

Step into a world of tiny wonders during National Library Week! Our Book Nook Contest invites you to explore Small Adventures to Amazing Places! From fantastical realms to cozy real-world corners, you may create a miniature diorama of anything from your imagination. Need an example? Find one of our book nooks in the Adult display case. Submissions open April 1st through the 8th, with winners announced on April 10th. Need a box? Our Front Circulation desk will have a limited supply. All participants will receive a prize! Get all the details and entry forms at the Circulation Desk or on our website. Remember, your creations are yours to keep after the 10th. If they are not picked up by April 15th, they will be repurposed for Library use. Join the fun and let your creativity shine!

Blockfest 2024!

Let’s celebrate National Library Week! Join Madison Library District and Eastern Idaho Public Health for an afternoon of block building fun at Blockfest 2024! Explore math, science, and literacy skills as we stack, build, create, and topple our blocks! Socks are required. No sign-up needed; just drop in when you’re available. Join us in the Community Room on Wednesday, April 10th, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This event is great for ages 8 months to 8 years old with an accompanying adult. See you there!

Story Time

This month at Story Time, we’re shining a light on Child Abuse Awareness Month with curated books and engaging activities designed to bring families closer together. Join us each week as we focus on working together, walking together, and waiting together.

Toddler Time kicks off Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:30 AM, inviting little ones aged 10-23 months and their caregivers to bond over songs, stories, and sensory activities.

For preschoolers (ages 2-5) and their accompanying adults, Story Time awaits on Tuesdays at 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM, as well as Wednesdays at 10:30 AM, promising imaginative adventures and shared moments.

If your bundle of joy isn’t yet walking, don’t miss Book Babies on Wednesdays at 9:30 AM for infants aged 0-9 months and their grown-ups, featuring songs, stories, baby sign language, and sensory fun.

NEW! SPANISH STORY TIME! ¡Estamos encantados de presentarles la Hora del Cuento en Español! Únase a María D. Carvajal Castro, B.S. de Salud Pública del Este de Idaho los lunes a las 10:30 a.m. Para edades de 2 a 5 años y sus mayores.

Please note: There will be no Story Time activities April 8-10 as we welcome you to Blockfest instead! Also, Story Time activities will pause from April 29 until June 10 as we gear up for Summer Reading. Fear not! We’ll resume the 2nd Week of June.

Cooking the Books with Adult Makers

Due to popular demand, we’ve rescheduled “Cooking the Books” with Adult Makers to April 19th at 7:00 PM! Calling all culinary enthusiasts ages 18 and up, let’s devour B. Dylan Hollis’s “Baking Yesteryear” cookbook. Participants must pick up the library’s copy at the circulation desk then bring it to Adult reference to claim and copy a recipe. Whip it up at home and bring a sample to share in the Community Room. Let’s savor the flavors, discuss kitchen triumphs, and maybe leave a few culinary adventures in the past. It’s a feast for foodies and book lovers alike!

Calling all adventurers! Join us for Teen Dungeons & Dragons on Friday, March 15th at 3:30 PM! Embark on an epic journey where you create your own character, shape the story, and roll the dice to determine your fate. This event welcomes all teens aged 12-18, whether you’re a seasoned hero or new to the realm! Dive into a 1-2 hour session for first level characters (with leveling opportunities between sessions). Feel free to bring your own character or choose from our pre-made ones. Remember, all characters should be crafted using resources from the core 5th Edition player’s handbook. Make sure you sign up for our Teen Discord Server where we’ve posted preparation details. Don’t miss out on this magical adventure!

Get ready to Cook With a Book! Join us on Wednesday, March 20th at 4:30 PM when we’ll be delving into the world of The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall while whipping up some scrumptious chocolate chip cookies! Spring Teen Writing Contest

Hey teens ages 12-18: Do you love writing? Are you dreaming of gardens in the summer? Enter our Teen Writing Contest! Let Claude Monet’s enchanting “Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies” inspire your creativity. Innovative Inventions

Stanley Yelnats III is an inventor. Are you? We’ll give you a bag of supplies that shouldn’t be a part of anything and challenge your group to create the impossible. What should you build? That’s up to you. Surprise us! Bags are limited. Sign up by Thursday, February 8th. We’ll have your bags the following Monday. Then you’ll have 11 days to get creative. Inventions will be displayed through the end of the month and posted on our Facebook page. This activity is designed for all ages!

“I Can Fix That”

Onion Sam can fix just about anything. How handy are you? Expert fixer Bryan Jacobson will show us reasonable repairs that we should feel confident to do around our own homes – and let us know when to call in the professionals. Want to watch a fun movie on a big screen? We have got new titles and classics all lined up for an afternoon of movie fun for the whole family! Friday, February 2 we’re watching Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (NR). Friday, February 16 we’ll be watching Holes (PG). Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older. Chess & Game Club + Rated Chess Tournament

Join the Chess & Game Club for ages 9-18 Mondays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room! On February 5 & 12, engage in strategic battles and game adventures. But mark your calendars for February 26, when 25 chess players of all levels will compete in a rated chess tournament! Participants must be registered members of the US Chess Federation. Teen Crafts

Teens 12-18! Bring your friends and listen to music while you make an awesome art project to take home with you! Teen Crafts are held in the Community Room on Thursdays at 4:30 PM. On February 1, we will learn and practice sewing basics while making a felt forest friend keychain. Then, on February 15, we will make pocket worry pets!

Sploosh!

Join us for an activity inspired by Louis Sachar’s “Holes.” We’re making spiced peach recipes as mentioned in the book and pureeing them into “Sploosh” for sampling! Ages 12 and up are invited Friday, Feb 2 at 7 PM in the Community Room. See you there!

Chess & Game Club + Rated Chess Tournament

Join the Chess & Game Club for ages 9-18 Mondays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room! On February 5 & 12, engage in strategic battles and game adventures. But mark your calendars for February 26, when 25 chess players of all levels will compete in a Rated Chess Tournament! Participants must be registered members of the US Chess Federation. Sign up for the tournament using this form. Spectators are welcome, so bring your family and friends! Please, make sure to enter through the exterior Community Room door.

Have a say in what goes on at the Library for teens! Ages 12-18 are welcome to join us Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 4 PM in the Community Room to voice their input.

Anime Club

Join Teen Anime Club for ages 12-18! This month we’ve got a lineup of fun activities including a “Mushi-Shi” watch party on Feb. 8. On Feb. 22 we’ll be testing our knowledge with Anime Wheel of Fortune. Then catch ‘em all on Feb. 29 in the Pokemon Scavenger Hunt! Catch up with your anime-loving friends on Thursdays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room.

Innovative Inventions

Stanley Yelnats III is an inventor. Are you? We’ll give you a bag of supplies that shouldn’t be a part of anything and challenge your group to create the impossible. What should you build? That’s up to you. Surprise us! Bags are limited. Sign up by Thursday, February 8th. We’ll have your bags the following Monday. Then you’ll have 11 days to get creative. Inventions will be displayed through the end of the month and posted on our Facebook page. This activity is designed for all ages!

Dungeons & Dragons

Calling all young adventurers! Join us for an epic journey at Teen Dungeons & Dragons on Fridays, February 9 & 23 at 3:30 PM in the Community Room. Whether you’re a seasoned dungeon crawler or a newbie explorer, we welcome ages 12-18 to embark on a quest of imagination and fun. This month, Take your new character on a Camp Green Lake campaign with Stanley Yelnats and all his buddies from Louis Sacher’s book, “Holes”. Make sure you sign up for our Teen Discord Server where we’ve posted preparation details. Don’t miss out on this magical adventure! 

“I Can Fix That”

Onion Sam can fix just about anything. How handy are you? Expert fixer Bryan Jacobson will show us reasonable repairs that we should feel confident to do around our own homes – and let us know when to call in the professionals. Teen chefs and book lovers! Get ready to whip up some delicious fun as we create a mouthwatering peach cobbler inspired by Louis Sachar’s Holes! Let the flavors of the story come to life in every bite. Cook with a Book is on Wednesday, February 21, at 4:30 PM in the Community Room for ages 12-18.

Escape From Camp Green Lake

Join us at Camp Green Lake for a limited-time escape room experience! Uncover hidden truths from “Holes” as you decipher clues, unlock secrets, and race against time to escape the Warden’s office. Free of charge, first come, first served. Sign up now! Walk-ins are welcome, but priority will be given to those with time slots. Ages 12 and up. Groups of 2-5. Open February 27 – March 2 every 45 minutes within the following time frames:

  • Tue-Thu. 3-7 PM
  • Fri. 12-5 PM
  • Sat. 10 AM-1 PM
