Summer Reading

Adventure Begins at Your Library with Summer Reading 2024! This annual program is designed for all ages to read every day, participate in special Library programs, and stay active all summer long! Sign-ups begin on Monday, June 3rd, either online or at the Library. Complete your reading goals and earn prizes provided by our amazing local sponsors. Teen Action Council

Learn the art of chess and other games with the master of fun and strategy, Nick Allison. Tweens and teens ages 9-18 are welcome to join every Monday* from 4:30-5:30 PM in the Community Room. Do you have a flair for crafting captivating dialogue and compelling characters? Submit your best playwriting piece to Madison Library District’s contest and showcase your talent! Need guidance? Join us at Young League of Writers on June 12th & July 10th for expert tips and tricks. All participants win a prize! Calling all young wordsmiths! Join us Wednesdays at 4:00 PM in the Community Room for Young League of Writers, exclusively for teens ages 12-18. Whether you’re eager to share your latest creations or simply looking to connect with fellow writers, this is the place to be! We have a special guest joining us in June and July: Janine Gilbert, screenwriter extraordinaire! She is known for adapting Jack Weyland’s book Charly for the screen and will be helping us learn how to write for the screen and stage.

Cooking the Books with Adult Makers

Due to popular demand, we’ve rescheduled “Cooking the Books” with Adult Makers to April 19th at 7:00 PM! Calling all culinary enthusiasts ages 18 and up, let’s devour B. Dylan Hollis’s “Baking Yesteryear” cookbook. Participants must pick up the library’s copy at the circulation desk then bring it to Adult reference to claim and copy a recipe. Whip it up at home and bring a sample to share in the Community Room. Let’s savor the flavors, discuss kitchen triumphs, and maybe leave a few culinary adventures in the past. It’s a feast for foodies and book lovers alike!

Calling all aspiring performers! Join us for our Open Recital on April 22nd at 6:30 PM in the Community Room. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just starting out, all ages, all skill levels, and all instruments are welcome! Don’t miss your chance to share your talents with our library community. Creative Writing Club

Join our Creative Writers Club (Ages 18+) on Wednesdays, February 7 & 21 at 6:00 PM in the Community Room! Share your literary gems with fellow storytelling enthusiasts and bond over love for the written word.

Innovative Inventions

Stanley Yelnats III is an inventor. Are you? We’ll give you a bag of supplies that shouldn’t be a part of anything and challenge your group to create the impossible. What should you build? That’s up to you. Surprise us! Bags are limited. Sign up by Thursday, February 8th. We’ll have your bags the following Monday. Then you’ll have 11 days to get creative. Inventions will be displayed through the end of the month and posted on our Facebook page. This activity is designed for all ages!

“I Can Fix That”

Onion Sam can fix just about anything. How handy are you? Expert fixer Bryan Jacobson will show us reasonable repairs that we should feel confident to do around our own homes – and let us know when to call in the professionals. Everyone is invited to join us in the Community Room on Friday, Feb 9 at 7 PM!

Lip Care for Kissin’ Bandits

This month at Adult Makers is “Lip Care for Kissin’ Bandits” in conjunction with our On the Same Page program featuring Louis Sachar’s “Holes.” Meet us on Friday, Feb 16 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room. Ages 18+ will create their own lip balm, which may or may not be tinted. See you there!

Story Time

Join us in February for a world of imagination and learning at Story Time! 

Preschool Story Time (ages 2-5): It’s all about the Letter V! Explore Veggies, Valentine’s Day, Violins, and Something NEW, Just For You!

  • Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10:30 AM and Tuesdays at 6:30 PM

Toddler Time (ages 10-23 months): Move and groove to the music at Toddler Time

Family Friendly Films

Want to watch a fun movie on a big screen? We have got new titles and classics all lined up for an afternoon of movie fun for the whole family! Friday, February 2 we’re watching Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (NR). Friday, February 16 we’ll be watching Holes (PG). Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older. Parents, please prescreen movies to ensure they are appropriate for your child.

Chess & Game Club + Rated Chess Tournament

Join the Chess & Game Club for ages 9-18 Mondays at 4:30 PM in the Community Room! On February 5 & 12, engage in strategic battles and game adventures. But mark your calendars for February 26, when 25 chess players of all levels will compete in a rated chess tournament! Participants must be registered members of the US Chess Federation. Sign up for the tournament using the form below. Spectators are welcome, so bring your family and friends! Please, make sure to enter through the exterior Community Room door.

Tuesdays for Kids & Tweens

All young, curious minds ages 6-11 are welcome at our Tuesday activities at 4 PM in the Community Room. Adults must accompany their kids for all the fun.

  • Feb 6: Dive into the wonders of water! Experiment with water’s properties and create beautiful stained coffee filter and pasta snowflakes at Kid & Tween STEAM.
  • Feb 13: LEGO lovers unite! Kids 6-11 and teens 12-18 are invited to build an array of vehicles for our motorcade menagerie!

Combined Tween Book Club

Join our combined Tween Book Club on Feb. 8 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room! Mother Daughter Book Club and Books for Boys are for ages 8-11 and their grown-ups. This month we’re digging into Holes by Louis Sachar. Enjoy a Cootie Catcher Nickname generator, dig in the dirt for discussion questions, craft a Yellow Spotted Lizard pony bead keychain, and indulge in treats like peach pie, ice cream, and sunflower seeds. Don’t miss this fun literary adventure!

For tweens and teens aged 9-18, it’s time to embark on a journey into the world of strategy and fun with our master of games, Nick Allison. We meet every Monday in the Community Room at 4:30 PM. Game supplies are provided, so all you need to bring is your enthusiasm!

Mark your calendars for a special event – the Open Chess Tournament on November 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. It’s a Chess Tournament for all levels! Test your skills against players in your category for a chance to win sweet prizes. Our chess and game master, Nick Allison, will oversee the tournament, ensuring an exciting and fair competition. Spectators are welcome, so bring your family and friends to cheer you on!

Story Time

Join Miss Gina, Grace, and Marybeth for Preschool Story Time, Toddler Time, and Book Babies! For October, we will have fun with the letter O and opposites! 

  • Preschool Story Time is for ages 2-5 and meets Tuesdays at 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM and Wednesdays at 10:30 AM. 
  • Toddler Time is for ages 10-23 months and meets on Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:30 AM. 
  • Book Babies is for 0-9 month olds and meets Wednesdays at 9:30 AM.

Pick up Preschool Readiness Craft Kits at the Children’s Reference Desk at the end of the week. 

This month we’ll also have a special HALLOWEEN TRICKS OR TREATS Story Time! Come in your costumes for Halloween stories and trick-or-treat fun at either 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, or 12:30 PM on October 31.

There will be no Story Time or Toddler Time on Oct. 30 and no Book Babies on Nov. 1.

Kid & Tween STEAM

Come to the Library and participate in an activity that’s all about science, technology, engineering, art, or math! On October 3, we will have “owl”tastic fun making pinecone snowy owls and owl rice cake snacks. On October 17, we will make ghost rockets, ghost slime, and ghost bombs. Kids and Tweens ages 6-11 with an accompanying adult should meet us in the Community Room on Tuesdays at 4 PM.

Free Family Films

Free Family Films for all ages! Fridays at 3:30 PM in the Community Room! Oct. 6 is Oliver & Company, Oct. 13 is The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, and Oct. 20 is 101 Dalmatians.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older. Parents, please prescreen films to determine if it is appropriate for your child.

LEGO Club

Do you love LEGOs? Join other kids who love the ever popular bricks at the Library’s LEGO Club! Meet us in the Community Room on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 4:00 PM.

For ages 6-18, under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

Mother Daughter Book Club

Join Mother Daughter Book Club as we journey with Minli to Never-Ending Mountain. We will meet on Thursday, October 12 to discuss Grace Lin’s Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. We’ll enjoy crafts and treats as we fish for questions! Girls ages 8-11 should be accompanied by an adult and meet in the Community Room at 6:30 PM.

Join the Books for Boys Book Club as we face our fears! We will meet on Thursday, October 19 to discuss Josh Allen’s Only If You Dare: 13 Stories of Darkness and Doom.
